Various floodplain management measures have
previously been investigated for specific problem areas along the Georges River. In many
instances, the recommended measures have been adopted and implemented by the relevant
Council. The floodplain risk management study will review the effectiveness of those
measures as well as examining other potential measures to reduce the risk of flooding.
Measures that will be considered as part of
the current study include:
Review of existing flood mitigation
works
- Carinya Road deflector levee and finger levees
- Moorebank Voluntary Purchase Scheme (Liverpool Council)
- Milperra Voluntary Purchase Scheme (Bankstown Council)
- Milperra Drain Channel Improvement Works
- Rabaul Road Development Controls
- Construction of upstream dams or detention basins to
temporarily store floodwater during floods
- Construction of levees in other places to protect property
- Channel and culvert improvement works in tributary creeks (eg
on Little Salt Pan Creek or Salt Pan Creek)
- Flood-proofing of individual properties by waterproofing
walls and/or deflector banks;
- Controls on future development in flood liable areas (eg.
Minimum floor levels, controls on the extent of filling allowed on properties, etc.);
- Improvements to flood warning
both before and during floods;
- Improving evacuation procedures and emergency management
plans;
- Promoting public education, community participation and flood
awareness programs;
- Making sure all information about the potential risks of
flooding is available to all residents and business owners;
- Providing information to residents or property owners stating
whether their property is subject to flooding;
- Making sure residents and business owners have Flood Action
Plans these outline what to do, where to go and who to contact in a flood;
- Installing some flood markers (for example on telegraph
poles) to act as constant reminders of the heights of previous floods.
If you would like to suggest any other
measures that you think the study should also assess, or if you would like to offer your
opinion on any of the measures listed above, please provide your feedback below.
